May 11th, 2023: Couple Involved in Hit-and-Run Crash Nabbed by Police after Fleeing to Nearby Restaurant
The occupants of an SUV involved in a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 10 and Hilderbrand Avenue were caught after they tried hiding in a nearby restaurant. The SUV ran a red light before it struck the side of another vehicle. The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on May 11th.
After the crash, the two occupants of the SUV fled from the scene and went into a restaurant. The couple had already sat down and ordered food when the police reached out to the restaurant in search of the SUV’s passengers. As the police approached the restaurant, the man tried to hide in the attic, but he fell to the floor after the space collapsed. The police found the woman hiding in the bathroom.
May 11th, 2023: Suspected Drunk Driver Takes Out Power Lines Near Sandau Road and Isom Road Intersection in Rollover Accident
A man suspected of driving while intoxicated rolled his car over and took out power lines in the process. The accident occurred along the Sandau Road and Isom Road intersection around 2:00 a.m. on May 11th. The motorist in question was moving along the intersection when his vehicle struck a concrete barrier. The car proceeded to roll through the concrete barrier and a chain link fence while also destroying power lines and a utility pole.
Despite rolling his vehicle, the driver emerged from the accident with no injuries. After being evaluated, authorities took the driver into custody for further investigation.
May 10th, 2023: Woman Walking along 7300 Block of Somerset Road Struck by Blue Sedan
A woman walking along the 7300 Block of Somerset Road on the night of May 10th was struck by a blue sedan. The driver of the blue sedan was coming out of a turn when they hit the female pedestrian. The driver tended to the accident victim before she was taken to Mission Trail Baptist Hospital by ambulance.
Police said the driver showed no signs of intoxication.
May 9th, 2023: Wrong-Way Crash on Grissom Road Leads to One Fatality
Grissom Road was the site of a tragic wrong-way accident that took one person’s life on the night of May 9th. The accident began with the driver of an SUV losing control as they were moving eastbound on Grissom Road. After losing control, their SUV ended up in the westbound lane of Grissom Road. It was subsequently struck on the passenger side by another vehicle.
Sources report that two people were involved in the wrong way accident. Both drivers went to the hospital. Unfortunately, one of the drivers succumbed to their injuries. The other driver’s condition has stabilized. Police officers are still investigating the potential cause of the crash.
May 6th , 2023: One Person Dead Following Side-Impact Crash on the 9400 Block of SW Loop 410
One person died after a side-impact crash on the 9400 Block of SW Loop 410 around 10:00 p.m. on May 6th. A Chevrolet Trailblazer was moving along SW Loop 410 when it became cut off by a Honda Civic going across the entrance ramp. The sudden maneuver caused the Chevrolet Trailblazer to hit the Honda Civic on the passenger side. The impact killed the twenty-four-year-old passenger occupying that side of the Trailblazer.
The occupants of the Honda Civic sustained minor injuries. The police are charging the twenty-year-old driver of the Honda Civic with one count of manslaughter.
May 6th, 2023: Drunk Driving Crash on North Loop 1604 Access Road Causes One Fatality
Continuing with this rundown of recent car accidents in the San Antonio news, drunk driving has again been cited as a contributing factor in a fatal accident. The accident occurred before 2:00 a.m. on May 6th.
A driver moving east on the 1604 Access Road struck a vehicle traveling south on the same road. Unfortunately, one passenger in the vehicle moving south died from her injuries. The police have since identified the passenger as twenty-one-year-old Shae Valenzuela.
Police initially suspected that the driver moving east somehow lost control of their vehicle. However, further investigation revealed that the unnamed driver of the other vehicle was intoxicated at the time of the crash. As a result, authorities have charged the unnamed driver with intoxicated manslaughter due to the recent findings.
May 2nd, 2023: Multi-Vehicle Crash on Loop 1604 Lands Three Victims in the Hospital
What began as an incident involving two vehicles became a three-car crash that landed three victims in the hospital. The initial incident involving two drivers occurred on Loop 1604 near Huebner Road. The drivers involved in the initial crash were exchanging information when another vehicle struck the stopped cars, which knocked down three people at the accident site.
The accident involving the third vehicle occurred around 11:30 p.m. on May 2nd. Police officers took the driver of the third vehicle into custody under suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The three people involved in the crash went to the hospital; two of the victims were stable, but the third victim was said to be in critical condition immediately following the accident.
April 23rd, 2023: Twenty-three -Year-Old Woman Dies After She Drives off I-10 Access Road
Twenty-three-year-old Jada Rocha died after her car drove off the I-10 access road. Around 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, Rocha was going through the 10500 Block of I-10 West when witnesses said her vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier on the access road. Witnesses also said they saw Rocha drive over the barrier.
After hitting the concrete barrier, Rocha’s vehicle fell onto the highway below. The car spun as it fell and eventually landed on its roof.
Police officers pronounced Rocha dead at the scene of the accident. Thus far, the police officers have not determined the cause of the initial crash.
April 21st, 2023: Hit-and-Run Incident on Interstate 35 Leaves Pedestrian Dead
A male pedestrian making his way to the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 was killed in a hit-and-run crash on April 21st.
The pedestrian was moving from the northbound to the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 when a vehicle struck him. The collision occurred while the man was still in the southbound portion of Interstate 35. Emergency responders went to the accident site immediately, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
April 19th, 2023: Malfunctioning Brakes Causes Car to Crash into the Window of Mama Margie’s on 9550 Interstate 10 West
One branch of the popular Mama Margie’s chain of Mexican restaurants had an unexpected visitor early in the morning of April 19th. A driver lost control of their vehicle and subsequently crashed into the window of the Mama Margie’s restaurant located on 9550 Interstate 10 West. The investigation into the incident revealed that the car’s brakes malfunctioned before the crash.
No injuries resulted from the crash.
April 9th, 2023: T-Bone Accident on S. General McMullen Believed to Be Caused by Intoxicated Driver
An SUV making its way through the 1000 Block of S. General McMullen near Castroville Road was involved in a T-bone accident. Police said the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on April 9th. The SUV was going through S. General McMullen when another vehicle heading out of a parking lot struck it from the side. The three people in the SUV went to University Hospital in serious condition.
According to the report from KENS 5, the driver of the vehicle that hit the SUV was not injured. Police also detained the driver under suspicion of DWI. The driver may face three counts of intoxicated assault for his role in the accident.
March 23rd, 2023: Intoxicated Drivers Involved in Three-Vehicle Crash along NW Loop 410
An ugly multi-vehicle accident took place on the 6300 Block of NW Loop 410 on March 23rd. It occurred around 2:20 a.m.
The incident began when a black 2017 Jaguar XE making its way south on NW Loop, became rear-ended by a black 2015 Chevrolet Camaro. The force of the crash sent the Jaguar XE into a collapsible impact attenuator.
Following the impact, the Chevrolet Camaro ended up on the right shoulder of NW Loop’s main lanes. Meanwhile, the Jaguar XE stopped near the number two and three lanes on the other side. Unfortunately, the Jaguar XE was facing the wrong way when a red 2017 Toyota RAV4 struck it from the side. The force of the collision caused the Jaguar XE to rip in half.
One of the passengers of the Jaguar XE, a thirty-six-year-old man, remained in the vehicle’s front half. Another passenger, a twenty-nine-year-old woman, was ejected from the Jaguar XE. Both of the Jaguar XE’s passengers went to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
According to the report from News 4 San Antonio, the front half of the Jaguar ended up near a concrete median after the collision with the Toyota RAV4. The Toyota RAV4 carried the back half of the Jaguar XE for a few moments.
Police officers investigating the multi-car accident checked if the drivers involved were intoxicated. However, both the driver of the Toyota RAV4 and the man behind the wheel of the Jaguar XE were said to be intoxicated after tests. As a result, the authorities booked the two intoxicated drivers.
March 23rd, 2023: Thirty-three 33-Year-Old Man Dead Following Car Crash on Basse Road
A car crash on Basse Road led to the tragic death of a thirty-three-year-old man. The incident occurred along the 300 Block of Basse Road near Jones Maltsberger Road on March 23rd. Reports about the incident began to come in at around 10:15 p.m.
Police officers investigating the accident said the incident started with a minor crash involving a red 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a black 2022 BMW. The two drivers involved in the minor car accident had pulled over. They were in the process of checking their vehicles when another car rear-ended the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The other vehicle that struck the Jeep Grand Cherokee was a tan 2001 Mercury.
The impact caused by the Mercury caused the Jeep Grand Cherokee to crash into the BMW a second time. Unfortunately, one of the drivers got caught between the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the BMW. The man was crushed between the two vehicles. Emergency responders rushed the injured man to University Hospital, but he did not survive.
Authorities did not release the identity of the man killed in the incident. Additionally, at the time of writing this, they had not identified the driver of the Mercury.
March 12th, 2023: Multiple People Injured after Three-Vehicle Crash on North Loop 1604 West
A three-vehicle crash on the 8400 Block of North Loop 1604 West injured several people. It happened a bit after 8:00 p.m. on March 12th.
The incident began when a Tundra pickup truck started to merge. While merging, the Tundra pickup collided with a Honda moving south. The Honda then rear-ended a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado.
The Tundra pickup smashed into a concrete median before stopping on the roadway’s left shoulder. The driver of the Tundra pickup was taken immediately to the hospital as they sustained life-threatening injuries from the accident. Following treatment, the hospital released the driver of the Tundra pickup, but the authorities subsequently charged them with driving with an invalid license.
The passengers in the Honda also went to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for injuries they sustained from the crash. Among the passengers injured in the Honda was a six-year-old boy. The child broke his arm. The authorities did not disclose the injuries of the other passengers.
March 5th, 2023: DWI Suspect Involved in Car Accident on N Loop 1604 E
Authorities came to investigate an accident on the 3400 Block of N Loop 1604 E near Redland Road. The accident took place around 2:23 a.m. on March 5th.
According to the report from KENS 5, the accident began when one driver lost control of their vehicle. The out-of-control vehicle then struck an SUV nearby. The first vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the access road. The SUV hit a concrete divider after the initial impact.
The reason the driver lost control of their vehicle remains unclear. However, the police did detain the driver under suspicion of DWI.
One passenger of the SUV was taken to BAMC. Police say the SUV passenger was in stable condition.
Feb 24th, 2023: Firefighters Come to Aid of Woman Trapped in Her Vehicle after Rollover Accident on Donella Drive
A woman ended up trapped inside her vehicle after it rolled over while she was moving along Donella Drive. The rollover accident specifically took place near the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 before 1:00 a.m. on February 24th.
Firefighters responded to the accident and helped remove the woman from her vehicle. They have not confirmed the exact cause of the rollover accident, but authorities did say that she was not intoxicated. Authorities could also not verify if the woman sustained injuries from the rollover crash.
Feb. 16th, 2023: Wrong Way Crash on Hillcrest and Crestview Drive Leads to One Fatality
The driver of a Jeep moving east in the opposite lanes of Hillcrest was involved in a wrong-way crash with another vehicle. The two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided head-on with each other. The wrong-way accident happened at around 11:00 a.m. on February 16th.
The driver of the Jeep moving in the wrong direction was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The other driver went to the hospital following the wrong-way accident. The authorities said the other driver suffered no life-threatening injuries from the crash.
Feb. 16th, 2023: Speeding Driver Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-10 West
A deadly multi-vehicle accident on I-10 West at Medical Drive may have been due to speeding. The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on February 16th.
According to the police, the multi-vehicle accident began when a driver of a Cadillac lost control of their vehicle. Authorities said that the driver of the Cadillac was speeding before crashing into a concrete barrier. The collision sent the Cadillac rolling and ejected the driver.
A Camaro then hit the destroyed Cadillac on the same road. Another car approached the wreckage and tried to avoid it. While trying to avoid the cars, the other driver lost control of their vehicle and ran into a tree.
The report notes that the driver of the Cadillac went to the hospital. Unfortunately, they could not survive their serious injuries. The police officers detained the other two drivers involved in the incident under suspicion that they were driving under the influence.
